  • First debit card service
  • First registered education plans
  • First fully functional internet banking
  • First branchless bank (Citizens Bank)

Quick Facts

Now that you know how often credit unions put their members' needs first, learn a little more about the credit unions that put all Canadians first.

There are 476 credit unions in Canada affiliated with Canadian Central. They have:

  • 1,778 locations
  • 5 million members
  • $99.5 billion in assets
  • $87.3 billion in deposits
  • $83.3 billion in loans
  • 24,000 employees
  • Together they are the second largest lender to small businesses in Canada

The first Canadian caisse populaire, or credit union, was started in December, 1900 in Levis, Quebec, by Alphonse Desjardins.

Part of a Large, Growing System

The Canadian credit union system, including the Desjardins group in Quebec, has combined assets of more than $200 billion, making this collective the fifth-largest financial institution in the country.  Almost 11 million Canadians are members of credit unions or caisses populaires – one-third of the population.
